Breakout films and performances for 2026

Even though we’re only in the second month of 2026, a handful of breakout performances have already emerged. Keeping January and February releases in mind, three highlighted performances take the centre stage.

Jacob Elordi in Wuthering Heights (2026)

Jacob Elordi plays Heathcliff as he is seen obsessed with Margot Robbie. His intense presence is widely acclaimed. His hunkier physique complements his romanticized depiction of the character, and critics are constantly applauding.

Margot Robbie in Wuthering Heights (2026)

Margot Robbie plays Catherine Earnshaw in the same film as her character navigates her position between reckless passion and deep regret. Their boldly electric chemistry has won many hearts, but some have been harsh, saying it was a thoughtless interpretation of the classic character.

Ralph Fiennes in The Bone Temple (2026)

We have never seen Ralph Fiennes in such a powerful, strong, and raw appearance. It is safe to say that he outdid himself when compared to his role in 28 Years Later (2025). His most notable scene is Dr. Ian Kelson dancing to the Iron Maiden song.

Most anticipated performances of 2026

Several films are lined up for release in 2026, and some of them have already created a buzz as fans cannot wait to watch their favorite artists in a worthy role. Let’s delve into the ones that are currently making waves on the internet.

Tom Rhys Harries in Clayface (2026)

Tom Rhys Harries is playing the titular role of Clayface, who will turn into a shape-shifting monster. His character will be of Matt Hughes in the beginning, aspiring to become the face of Hollywood, but an unfortunate incident transforms him into something hideous.

Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Sadie Sink herself has been amused by the way fans have been coming up with new theories every day about her character in the new Spider-Man film. Brand New Day stars Sadie Sink, but her role is still unconfirmed. This could be the filmmakers’ strategy to keep the fans hyped.

Nick Jonas in Power Ballad (2026)

Nick Jonas is playing Danny in the upcoming Power Ballad. He will be seen alongside Paul Rudd in a story of two fading singers. Jonas will be one of the members of a dying boy band, while Rudd will be a wedding singer. The two will be seen in a clash, reigniting themes of self-respect, friendship, music, and the price of ambition, as per Deadline.

Milly Alcock in Supergirl (2026)

Milly Alcock already looks fabulous in Supergirl’s costume. She will be playing Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who is on a galaxy-trotting quest for revenge.

Jacob Elordi in The Dog Stars (2026)

Jacob Elordi is wanted by every filmmaker due to his remarkable past performances in Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights. He will be seen playing Hig in the upcoming The Dog Stars, a thriller directed by Ridley Scott.

Zazie Beetz in They Will Kill You (2026)

Zazie Beetz will be Asia Reaves, who is not ready to spare anyone, as she is going to beat down everyone in a demonic cult. The horror action comedy shows her as a housekeeper on a mysterious high-rise in New York, which she is unaware is the house of evil.

Nicholas Galitzine in Masters of the Universe (2026)

Our childhood hero, known as He-Man, is coming to theatres but in a live-action feature now, with Nicholas Galitzine in the titular role. He mentioned in an interview that bulking up for the role is “the hardest thing” he’s ever done, and it would be unfair to say that he said it was easy.

Lily-Rose Depp in Werwulf (2026)

After giving a memorable performance in Nosferatu (2024), Lily-Rose Depp is geared up for another striking performance. The recently released photos from the sets of Robert Eggers’ Werwulf give her an unidentified persona.

Anne Hathaway in Verity (2026)

Anne Hathaway is set to star as the titular character in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s thriller novel of the same name. Those who have read the book would know that Verity Crawford is the embodiment of both toxicity and a subtle innocence.

Natalie Portman in The Gallerist (2026)

Natalie Portman will portray a desperate art dealer in Miami who conspires to sell a dead man’s body at the Art Basel. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, which also stars Jenna Ortega.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Dune: Part Three (2026)

Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing Alia Atreides, continuing with the same character she played in a cameo role in Dune: Part Two (2024). Her role has a powerful presence as she has immense political influence and is even dangerous with dual-conscious knowledge.

Ethan Hawke in The Weight (2026)

We loved Ethan Hawke as The Grabber in The Black Phone (2021). We cannot see him as he had a mask on his face, but his voice gave us the goosebumps much-needed for the experience. Similarly, he plays Samuel Murphy in the upcoming The Weight (2026), where his commanding presence again is central for navigating a perilous Depression-era Oregon landscape.

Cameron Diaz in Outcome (2026)

After a long hiatus, Cameron Diaz came back to shoot Jamie Foxx’s Netflix action-comedy Back in Action (2025). She is ready for another project with Keanu Reeves this time, and I am personally excited for this one, being a die-hard Reeves fan. Outcome (2026) has Diaz as Kyle, Reeves’ friend, who will have a major contribution when Reeves’ character is in trouble in the film.

Christian Bale in The Bride! (2026)

Christian Bale plays a crucial role in his new movie, The Bride!, as he will reincarnate a reimagined, deeply emotional version of Frankenstein’s monster. Since the film’s narrative follows up on the punk and romantic side, we speculate a high level of dedication to the role.

Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary (2026)

Project Hail Mary relies heavily on the solo role of Ryan Gosling as he serves as the emotional, comedic, and dramatic anchor for the story. He is expected to carry the whole film on his shoulders with vulnerability, as it is the reluctance of the character when tasked with saving humanity.

Kristen Stewart in The Wrong Girls (2026)

The Twilight series sensation, Kristen Stewart, is working on a comedy feature where she will be joining Alia Shawkat as codependent best friends living in struggling conditions. The film is currently in production and is a buddy comedy, which we can’t wait to watch this year.

Denzel Washington in Here Comes the Flood (2026)

Another Netflix heist-thriller, directed by Fernando Meirelles, has Denzel Washington starring alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Washington is in the top-tier lead, possibly entangled in a double-cross, chaotic heist plot.

Hugh Jackman in The Death of Robin Hood (2026)

This is going to be huge, and I am personally looking forward to it. Hugh Jackman plays Robin Hood, but the reimagination of the classic tale is darker and heavier this time. The protagonist will be seen struggling with guilt due to their violent past, but wants to save a child, which takes him on a character-driven journey.

Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (2026)

Cillian Murphy reprises Tommy Shelby, and the trailer gave us an older-looking Shelby, likely to face his own demons. His character defined the show’s tone, and the film is to offer the same blend of cold, strategic menace. Even by using his eyes and silent presence, Murphy conveys everything at great length.

Emily Blunt in Disclosure Day (2026)

As the trailer of Disclosure Day suggests, Emily Blunt is a TV meteorologist who is transformed as soon as an extraterrestrial possession is noticed. She is the central figure of the story, as she is the one most extensively exposed to the nonhuman intelligence.

Andrew Garfield in Artificial (2026)

Andrew Garfield stars as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the dramedy, Artificial (2026), counting it as his second collaboration with Luca Guadagnino. Based on the life of real Samuel Harris Altman, an American businessman who is responsible for the successful launch of ChatGPT in 2022, he is considered one of the leading figures of the AI boom. Garfield is expected to relive Altman’s turbulent 2023 period when he was fired and hired again, and testify to the rapid shift in power within the AI industry.

Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday (2026)

Doomsday marks Robert Downey Jr.’s villainous appearance as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. He is set to portray one of the most feared antagonists of Marvel Comics, a genius scientist and ruler of the nation of Latveria. Doctor Doom is the most talked-about principal antagonist in the MCU world, and we can’t wait to see his layered presence on screen.

Kara Young in Is God Is (2026)

Based on Harris’s 2018 play of the same name, Is God Is has Kara Young playing Racine (the Rough One). She will be on a journey of revenge to kill her father. She is the disfigured twin who got an order from her mother, the so-called god in the film, as they call their father, responsible for a fire that left all three of them with serious burn scars.

Andrew Scott in Pressure (2026)

Andrew Scott is slated to play James Stagg, on whose shoulders, along with the other two army officers, are the decision to launch or call off the invasion. The decision needs to be taken within 72 hours, as the name very much suggests.

Keanu Reeves in The Entertainment System is Down (2026)

After Good Fortune (2025), Keanu Reeves seems perfect for comedy in another satirical comedy flick, The Entertainment System is Down (2026). He assumes the mantle of an electrician on the plane to fix the entertainment system issues, forcing the passengers to face existential boredom.

Matt Damon in The Odyssey (2026)

Matt Damon brings to life Odysseus in a grand-scale retelling of Homer’s epic poem. He will be in a lead role, narrating a 10-year journey of the king back to his home, where his wife and son wait.

Scarlett Johansson in Paper Tiger (2026)

Scarlett Johansson replaces Anne Hathaway in a 2026 gritty crime thriller, directed by James Gray. She will be seen alongside Adam Driver and Miles Teller, the two brothers entangled with the Russian mafia.

Zendaya in The Drama (2026)

Zendaya takes on the role of Emma Harwood in The Drama (2006), who seems confused about her wedding to Robert Pattinson’s character. She will be ensnared in darkly comedic and emotional elements, exploring the pressures of unexpected truths within an intimate relationship.

Brad Pitt in The Adventures of Cliff Booth (2026)

Brad Pitt will be reprising the role of Cliff Booth as he famously played in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He is a former Hollywood stuntman and free-spirited rugged figure, and it was the role that won Pitt an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Pitt has always something magnetic in his performance, like Sonny Hayes in the F1 movie (2025).

Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026)

Meryl Streep returns as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2. She is the cinematic editor-in-chief, navigating the decline in print media. Her icy demeanor and unflinching demand for high standards won her an Academy Award for the first film.

Pedro Pascal in Behemoth! (2026)

Pedro Pascal will be playing the role of a cellist in the story directed by Tony Gilroy. There is no official logline for the film, but it is predicted to be a love letter for the people who make it. Since Pedro’s role is central to the narrative and its emotional depth, his performance will showcase his range beyond action or franchise films.

Tom Cruise in Digger (2026)

Tom Cruise stars in the lead role as Digger Rockwell, described in the early synopsis as “the most powerful man in the world.” Surely, the teaser indicates, his journey is going to be chaotic with dark comedy and satirical stakes. Though the plot details are still under wraps, the early details mention Digger unleashing a disaster and is now on a mission to save humanity before the catastrophe consumes everything.

Breakout performances based on awards buzz

Timothee Chalamet in Marty Supreme (2025)

Timothee Chalamet delivered a career-best, transformative performance in Marty Supreme (2025). He portrayed a table-tennis hustler based on Marty Reisman. His role was physically demanding and energetic. Critics have loved what he put on the table this time and won the first-ever Golden Globe 2026 for his role. Also, Marty Supreme earned nine Oscar nominations, including Chalamet’s lead performance.

Jessie Buckley in Hamnet (2025)

Playing Shakespeare’s wife and the mother of their son Hamnet,  Jessie Buckley was “overwhelmed” to be starring in Hamnet (2025). She delivers a powerful, deeply moving performance as Agnes Hathaway, a role that demands a focus on the emotional aftermath of the death of Shakespeare’s young son. She already won a Golden Globe 2026 for Best Actress (Drama). The Academy has also given her a nod in the same category where previously it was for The Lost Daughter (2021).

Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another (2026)

Teyana Taylor played Perfidia Beverly Hills, a complex and emotionally charged supporting character. Critics and audiences highlighted her as fearless, and she won her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for the role. She is nominated for the same role at the 2026 Oscars, with the film receiving double-digit nominations, positioning it as a serious contender this awards season.

Stellan Skarsgård in Sentimental Value (2026)

Stellan Skarsgård portrays Gustav Borg, a once-renowned film director who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughters. The role has already won him the Best Supporting Actor award at the Golden Globes 2026 and is nominated in the same category for the impending Oscars 2026. He deserved the recognition as he conveyed emotional vulnerability, lived-in intensity in a flawed but profoundly human character.

Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another (2025)

One Battle After Another has DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a washed-up revolutionary, who wants to save his daughter, Willa. He presents a physical commitment and subtle inner life in a character wrestling with past choices and present danger. He bagged an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for the role in one of the best-reviewed films of the decade.

Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love (2025)

Jennifer Lawrence plays Grace in Die My Love (2025). She battles postpartum depression and psychological disintegration after moving to a rural locality with her partner. Just like Teyana Taylor, critics hail her performance as raw and fearless. Reviewers have called her most vivid and daring performance in years. She did not receive any nomination in this year’s Oscars but did receive one in the Golden Globes 2026, for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, highlighting industry recognition.

Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon (2025)

One of the most consistently recognized drama actors, Ethan Hawke, earns his fifth Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Blue Moon. He plays Lorenz Hart, carrying the role single-handedly with monologue-like dialogue, depicting raw humanity. His brilliance, bitterness, and deeply nuanced character have been hailed by the critics, giving the film a vital emotional core.

Rose Byrne in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (2025)

Rose Byrne’s role of Linda in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is fierce and emotionally unfiltered. The genre-bending film asks Byrne to unleash her psychological pressures due to her infant daughter’s chronic illness. Critics acknowledge her intensity in panic and frustration, describing it as extremely human. She already won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a musical or comedy (2026). She is officially nominated for the Best Actress Oscar at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards, too.

Emma Stone in Bugonia (2025)

This is one of my favorite performances of the year as Emma Stone played Michelle, a high-powered, Ruthless CEO of a pharmaceutical company. She is perfectly unpredictable till the end, and even I couldn’t tell whether she’s an alien or not. Critics called her fearless and commanding. Although she didn’t get a nomination at the Golden Globes, she was nominated for Best Leading Actress at the 2026 BAFTA Awards. Her standout performance also earned her a Best Actress nomination for the 98th Academy Awards.

Renate Reinsve in Sentimental Value (2026)

Renate Reinsve plays Nora Borg in Sentimental Value, an avant-garde theatre actress struggling with estrangement from her father. Her inner life, associated with a fragile psyche, is best characterized as built around personal and artistic reconciliation. She is already on top of her game by receiving Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. As a Norwegian actress, she represents the Academy’s expanding appreciation for global cinema.

Kate Hudson in Song Sung Blue (2025)

According to NPR, 25 years after her first Oscar nomination for Almost Famous (2000), Kate Hudson is nominated again for playing Claire Sardina in Song Sung Blue. Hudson landed her role after co-star Hugh Jackman saw her singing and talking about music on CBS’s Sunday Morning. Critics and audiences alike noted that her work feels more complex, layered, and transformative than many of her previous roles.

Jacob Elordi in Frankenstein (2025)

Jacob Elordi plays the isolated creature created by Victor Frankenstein. He blends physical commitment, emotional depth, and tragic complexity with his monstrous role. Critics describe his turn as marvelous in conveying both intelligence and sensitivity. Elordi won Best Supporting Actor at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards and first-ever Oscar nomination at the upcoming Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

Amy Madigan in Weapons (2025)

I am personally in awe of Amy Madigan’s performance as Aunt Gladys in ZachCregger’s Weapons. She is dark, she is vile, and she is unapologetically sadistic. Madigan has elevated herself in the genre territory as her character is one of the most talked-about elements of the film. She won Best Supporting Actress at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards and her first Golden Globe nomination in 36 years. Now, the Academy nominated her as Best Supporting Actress for the forthcoming Oscars 2026.
